Several things may cause this sad thing, but if it does crack, all is not lost. See bottom.

Cakes can crack when oven is too hot, and you are opening door to continue to check on it. It is especially bad in chocolate cakes. Do not open oven, look through glass and use your timer. Also if you use cooking sprays, spray side of pan only and then you must use flour or cocoa on sprayed to keep batter from pulling away. I still always line bottom of pan with parchment to ensure clean turn out.
